Editing

What mistakes have you missed? Which lines are unclear or don’t sound right?

Editing is one of the most important parts of ensuring a game’s quality. Typos look unprofessional. Mismatched dialogue text and audio makes accessibility feel like an afterthought. Creating characters and story without sensitivity consulting can make you miss big issues.

Copyediting:

  • Scan all text for typos, punctuation mistakes, and missing or extraneous words

  • Analyze text for clarity, brevity, and end-user functionality (i.e., will the average player read this?)

  • See where more text is necessary, and where it gets in the way

Sensitivity consulting:

  • Identify issues with sensitive subjects and find ways to adjust

  • Recommend lived experience experts and connections to help advise on a variety of stories and characters

  • Adapt individual lines or entire storylines to maintain the game’s original intent while considering all kinds of players

Subtitle parity:

  • Ensure that all voice lines match all subtitle text

  • Find and fix issues that make the game worse for deaf or hard of hearing players

  • Does the subtitle timing match the voice line delivery?
